My first peer-reviewed article in journal “19”
In November 2024, my very first peer-reviewed article was published in 19, a journal for interdisciplinary studies in the long Nineteenth Century.
The article is called “‘A flower of an exile’: International Political Networks in Anna Birkbeck’s Album”, and it’s about a political sonnet that appears in the album of Anna Birkbeck, wife of George Birkbeck, who mingled in very interesting circles in early Nineteenth Century London (1820s-30s for my article). The album features an unpublished poem by Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein, to give you an idea!
My article focuses on an entry by Polish author, translator, and exile Stanisław Egbert Koźmian. Yes I’m half Italian and half Japanese but I’m also married to a Polish man and can read a little bit of Polish, so this caught my eye when looking at the album in my final term on my Master’s degree!
The stuff I found out from this little starting point is genuinely super fascinating. It’s a little niche but honestly have a read, it’s so interesting what you can find out when you fall down a rabbit hole and start uncovering so many links between people and events.
