Presenting at my first conference

Yes, it’s a pre-conference digital event, technically, but still very exciting for me!

I’ll be presenting a paper titled “‘Grotesque Mechanical Toys’: The Japanese Players in 1900 London as a Vision of Japan”, talking about the Japanese troupe of actors headed by husband-and-wife duo Otojirō and Sadayakko Kawakami and how their theatre performances were received in the press of the time.

The paper will be presented online as part of a panel called “People, Politics, and Protests in the Victorian Press” on 27 June 2025, one of the events in the lead up to the Annual Conference of the Research Society for Victorian Periodicals.
